5 Culture Shocks Faced by British Expats
*
in America
byLAURENCEBROWN
It has often been said that Britain and The United States are two
countries separatedby a common language. But anyBritish expat*
residing inoneof the50 stateswill tellyou that language isonly the
beginning; thatAmerican life itself is chock-full
*
of idiosyncrasies
*
,
routines,andpractices thatdiffersonoticeably from thoseofBritain.
Here are5 culture shocks facedbyBritish expats inAmerica.
1.Everything isSoMuchBigger
For most British expats, living in the United States can sometimes
feel like a scene fromHoney, I ShrunkTheKids;many of the every-
day amenities
*
, services, and items with which you were once so
accustomedhavebeengivenanupgrade;a sizeupgrade. Insteadof
that Vauxhall Astra, Americans are driving large SUVs, Jeeps, and
family vans; the roads that these drive along are also considerably
wider; in restaurants, a medium pop drink (soft drink for many of
myAmerican readers) is the equivalentofwhat theBritish know as
a largepopdrink;asmallbackgarden (yard) isstillbigger thanmost
gardens inBritain;America itself issome43 times larger thanBritain
and,dependingonwhereyou live,someAmericansdon’tnecessarily
think of a 50-mile work commute as being too out of the ordinary.
So, if you areBritish and areplanning amove to theUnitedStates,
prepare to feel small for awhile.
2.Driving isBack-to-Front
If you are considering relocating* to theUSA, chances are you are
already aware Americans drive on the right and that the steering
wheel is on the left (though this wasn’t always the case). This can
beslightlydisorienting forpeoplewhohavespentmanyyearsdoing
thecompleteopposite,butaswithanything, it issomething towhich
youwill eventually become accustomed. What is less known about
Americandriving is thatvastlydifferent terminology isused to label,
for example, features of a car: instead of windscreen Americans
saywindshield; instead of indicator they say turn signal; instead of
bonnet they sayhood.
