In the text “5 Culture Shocks Faced by Brit-
ish Expats in America”, author Laurence
Brown names examples of the differen-
ces between Great Britain and the United
States.
Firstly, the size of things is a huge differ-
ence. For example, Americans drive much
larger cars than Britons and in conclusion,
the roads are also wider in the United
States. Similarly, drink sizes and gardens
are bigger than in Great Britain, as is the
whole country, which is 45 times larger.
For this reason, long commutes are widely
accepted.
Furthermore, Americans drive on the
right side of the road and have their steer-
ing wheel on the left side. Additionally, the
terminology concerning cars is different –
for instance it is “windshield” instead of
“windscreen”, “turn signal” instead of “in-
dicator” and “hood” instead of “bonnet”.
In the United States you have to add tax
to the price labelled on the product. In Great
Britain, the price tag shows the total cost.
The numerous linguistic variations
between the two countries are equally
important. Although they share the same
language, English, many words differ.
At last, the landscape is much wider
and has a greater variety in form and ap-
pearance than people are used to in Great
Britain.
Considering all aspects, it can be said
that life in the United States is different
from that in Great Britain, as many of the
examples given and the fact that the United
States does not have a monarchy influence
daily life and are therefore essential.
